I'm a complete and utter procrastinator when it comes to fully embracing the holiday season. I'm even worse when it comes to shopping for holiday gifts. While I'm sure many of you have completed any gift buying you will do, for the rest of you like me, I offer you some ideas of gifts that either support the local food movement, support local artisan food makers, or just seem interesting.
I haven't written about La Cocina yet, but it's a non-profit organization that assists low-income entrepreneurial women to develop and launch new food businesses. The organization helps with aid and instruction in everything from cooking to logo design to packaging, web development, marketing and shipping. It continues to support graduates such as Kika's Treats chocolate covered organic baked goods, NeoCocoa chocolate truffles, Sabores del Sur shortbread and dulce de leche alfajores and CMB Sweets seasonal jams among others. This year, it has brought products together from multiple graduates into a variety of gift boxes ranging from $15 to $100. They can be ordered from the La Concina website or from foodzie.com.
You can watch a short video about La Concina here.
Our friends CUESA over at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market offer a variety of gift giving ideas including gift coins for use at the Farmers Market, CSA memberships to a variety of farms including Eatwell, Farm Fresh to You, Tierra Vegetables and Frog Hollow as well as a variety of pre-packaged gifts from other local farms such as Bella Viva Orchards, Marshall Farms Natural Honey, G.L. Alfieri Farms, and Allstar Organics. If you shop this Saturday, December 20, the market will even gift wrap your purchases for free between 8:00am and 12:30pm.
We love La Cocina! Their gift baskets are really an awesome gift. We just recently launched our marketplace filled with artisan food producers (inluding la cocina), it's called Foodzie! http://foodzie.com You can support small artisan food producers that make everything from granola, to olive oil, to handmade candy bars. We're actually offering a 20% discount on all the products on our site through the end of the year if you'd like to check it out!

Hi Emily, of course I'm familiar with foodzie. I've been following your blog as you get ready for full launch. Congrats on the recent funding and go get 'em! May I put a request in to add a search by location function? :)

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly controlling my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.
